Women in Media

The Yates House for Military Veterans Inc.  (“TYHMV”),  in support of the Women In Media- Newark’s, 9th Annual Women’s History Month Film Festival, featuring “Women In Transition,”invited women veterans from our network to come out and enjoy an evening of International and Independent films by and about women on (March 27 , 2018 ) at The Newark Museum in beautiful downtown Newark. The many women (and our veterans) gathered to honor the work and commitment of female artists in film, the recording industry, political leadership and local public servants that champion and support women and gender issues affecting a women’s health, economic independence and physical safety for her and her children. It was noticeably evident that a substantial number of men were in attendance in support of women’s history month and their presence lent itself to the creation of an atmosphere of “authentic exchanges of ideas and perceptions about gender.” There were 3 films screened with “The Recy Taylor Story” being the most moving, talked about and impactful for its realistic depiction of the degree that racism, gender and violence was used as a tool to terrorize women and their families. The evening concluded with a healthy panel discussion on gender and violence in the era of the “#metoo” movement. Most of our women veterans were equally moved and impacted by the messages in the films and the comments made by the honorees on the panel. All of the women veterans were extremely appreciative for TYHMV inviting them to such a “relevant and quality veteran experience” that celebrated not only their service but, also their unique gender issues as women. The evening’s Honorees were Patricia Faison, Dr. Rochelle Hendricks, Celia King M.P.S., Ellen Lambert, Nettie Thomas, Miryam Torres and The Empress of Jazz and Blues Antoinette Montague. TYHMV salutes our women veterans for their service to our country and Women In Media-Newark’s dedicated service and spotlight on “Women In Transition” during women’s history month!!
